A perfect hand knitted cotton heavy bed cover. Virtually every French family would have their beds decked with these magnificent pieces. All of them would have been hand knitted by a family member. It was considered that a bed without a bedspread would not be complete. Also they were practical. because it would cover the duvet covers perfectly. There were only a few classic designs at the time, dating back to the 18th Century and women would use their imagination to somewhat elaborate on the pattern and make up a different design as they went along knitting ,but never far from the original concept design. It is basically 4 square pieces sitting in a frame of thickly knitted polka dots. All 4 sides are scalloped which gives a the cover a softer appearance and the 4 corners are rounded. You can use of course the 2 sides as you like depending on the width of the bed. The 2m20 length can be used vertically and you can use this length to make a bolster to cover the pillow cases. Not many of these excellent bed covers are in use any longer, or let alone available as most of them, because of intensive wear and tear have not made it this long. By the looks of it this cover has been very little used and probably for most of its life left in the wedding armoire dowry ad there were so many of them.
