Carved rectangular grey-reddish Chinese Seal bamboo shoot –China- end of Qing period On offer is a very fine good quality grey-reddish Chinese soft stone Seal with a semi-translucent structure. The seal is nicely carved in the shape of a bamboo shoot. The stone is, or resembles Shoushan stone. One side of the seal is engraved with Chinese characters. The face of the seal is carved in high quality with stylized Chinese characters. During the coming period, we will offer several pieces at a time. Origin: Recently, we had the privilege of acquiring a richly varied collection of old/antique Chinese stone seals. These remarkable seals have been brought together over many years by a private collector. They consist of good quality authentic Chinese seals made from various colored mineral stones, including possibly shoushan stone (larderite). The dating varies; but they are all from the Qing period to the 20th century. Carved by: Hengyun Shanmin (胡公寿) 1823-1886. Dated: 1880, April. About: Hu Gongshou was a representative painter of the Shanghai School of Painting in the late Qing Dynasty. Hu Gongshou (1823-1886), whose original name was Yuan, also known as Hengyun Shanmin, was a native of Huating (now Songjiang, Shanghai) and a core painter of the Shanghai School of Painting in the late Qing Dynasty. He was highly accomplished in landscape, orchid, bamboo and flower painting, and integrated ancient and modern techniques to form a unique style. As an important member of the "Feidan Pavilion Calligraphy and Painting Society", he worked with painters such as Ren Bonian and Zhang Xiong to promote the development of Shanghai School of Art. His works are collected by institutions such as the Shanghai Museum and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Size: Measures 53 mm * 34 mm * 15 mm. Weight: 51,9 gram.
