Heavy Bronze Ring Currency, Segmented Type 19th Century (Sans prix de réserve)

West Africa (Nigeria, Benue region) – Heavy Bronze Ring Currency, Segmented Type – 19th Century ________________________________________ Description Authentic West African ring currency cast in a copper alloy, originating from the Nigeria Benue / Middle Belt region. This object represents a traditional form of pre-monetary exchange and wealth storage, used in trade, ceremonial payments and bridewealth. The ring consists of two massive segments, originally forming a complete closed ring. It has a diameter of approximately 75 mm and a substantial combined weight of 596 grams, clearly indicating a monetary rather than ornamental function. The surface is decorated with simple stamped circular motifs (“eye” patterns) and restrained linear profiling. Such markings are typical for West African metal currencies, serving as identifiers of form or value rather than decoration. The ring was not intended for wearing. Its thickness, weight and segmented construction point to its use as ring money, stored, exchanged or presented in social and ritual contexts. This type is well documented in classic references such as Opitz, Odd & Curious Money and comparable ethnographic collections. The object shows authentic age wear, patina and surface irregularities, consistent with prolonged circulation and burial or storage. ________________________________________ Details • Material: Bronze / copper alloy • Weight: 596 g • Diameter: approx. 75 mm • Construction: Two-part segmented ring • Region: West Africa (Nigeria, Benue region) • Function: Ring currency / ceremonial payment • Period: 19th century
