L'ethnie Bambara ou Bamana est la plus important du Malí, Afrique occidentale subsaharienne.
Ils eurent leur apogée au début du XVII ème siècle, quand Kaladian Koulibary réunit un grand nombre de tribus affrontées, et créa l'empire de Segou, en dominant toute la courbe du fleuve Niger.
Les masques Bambara figurent les diverses manifestations de Faro, le dieu créateur, guide de l'univers, qui a donné toutes les qualités aux hommes et qui fait pousser les fruits de la terre.
Le masque Hyène est lié au rites du Koré et se montre la fin de l’initiation. Il démontre l’appartenance du porteur au groupe animalier qu’il incarne, singe, lion ou hyène.
