"Yoko Shimada (May 17, 1953 – July 25, 2022) was a Japanese actress born in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. She began classical ballet at the age of three, moved to Tokyo at eight, and joined the Wakakusa theater company in junior high school. Her television debut came in 1970 with the drama Osanazuma, followed by acclaimed roles in Zoku Hyoten, Wareda Seishun!, Karei-naru Ichizoku, and Shiroi Kyotou, gaining popularity in the 1970s as a dignified daughter of a good family. In 1980, she played the heroine in the American TV series Shōgun and became the first Asian actress to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series. Her 1992 photobook Kir Royal sold over 550,000 copies. In her later years, she founded a film production company and continued her career until her passing from colorectal cancer-related organ failure at a hospital in Shibuya, Tokyo, on July 25, 2022.
