Frank Horvat (1928–2020) - Shoes and Eiffel Tower, 1974

Digital print on glossy resin-coated (R.C.) photographic paper, printed later. With annotations and label on the reverse. Presented with passe-partout and ready to be mounted, it will be handled and packed with care and sent by registered mail. Dimensions: 19 × 25.6 cm Condition: Very fine. Striking and elegantly composed, Shoes and Eiffel Tower showcases Frank Horvat’s distinctive ability to merge fashion with visual storytelling. Photographed from a very low angle, a pair of high-heeled shoes fills the foreground, their strong, sculptural lines naturally framing the Eiffel Tower in the distance. A small group of figures gathered beneath the monument subtly reinforces the playful shift in scale, lending the image both humor and sophistication while anchoring it firmly in the Parisian landscape. Working close to the ground,Horvat carefully guided the model’s position until the tower aligned perfectly within the composition, then waited for a few pedestrians to animate the background without disrupting the image’s graphic clarity. The result feels both spontaneous and meticulously controlled — a balance that became one of his signatures. Born in Croatia and later based in France, Horvat was one of the great innovators of postwar photography. He helped revolutionize fashion imagery in the 1950s by taking models out of the studio and into the streets, bringing spontaneity and modern life into a genre previously defined by rigid formality. Restlessly creative, he moved fluidly between photojournalism, portraiture, and artistic experimentation, later becoming an early adopter of digital technology. Today, Horvat is celebrated for his ability to merge elegance with experimentation—qualities vividly present in this sophisticated Parisian composition.
