Item Description:
寺本守 Teramoto Mamoru(1949– ) — Yakishime Zogan-sai Tsubo (Sasama-yaki Unglazed Stoneware Jar with Polychrome Inlay Decoration)
A powerful and visually captivating large round jar (tsubo) in yakishime (unglazed, high-fired stoneware) from Sasama-yaki, Shizuoka Prefecture, decorated with an extraordinary zogan-sai (polychrome inlay) technique.
The work exemplifies Teramoto Mamoru's deeply personal synthesis of ancient Japanese firing traditions with a boldly expressive contemporary aesthetic.
Standing 35.5 cm tall with a body diameter of 27.5 cm, this imposing vessel commands the room.
The warm, iron-rich amber-brown and dark umber body — produced by prolonged high-temperature firing — provides the perfect ground for the piece's most striking feature: sweeping inlay lines and scattered polychrome dots applied across the entire surface.
The effect is simultaneously cosmic and natural — suggestive of shooting stars crossing a night sky, wind-bent grasses in an autumn field, or the intricate patterns of flowing water.
The zogan inlay technique, in which contrasting clays or pigments are pressed into carved channels before firing, here achieves a remarkable delicacy against the raw force of the yakishime body.
A deeply incised seal mark (tōin) is impressed on the base.
The piece comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako).
