André Gelpke, né en 1947, est considéré comme l’un des principaux photographes auteur en Europe. Dans les années 1970, André Gelpke, aux côtés de Heinrich Riebesehl et Michael Schmidt, fut l’un des pionniers à établir la photographie comme forme d’art en Allemagne.

"Der schiefe Turm von Pisa. Reisebilder 1972-1985" est le troisième livre de l’étudiant d’Otto Steinert, le légendaire photographe et professeur de la « Folkwang Schule » à Essen.

Outre Bernd (Bernhard) et Hilla Becher (« Anonyme Skulpturen »), Michael Schmidt (« Waffenruhe »), Otto Steinert (« Subjektive Fotografie »), Heinrich Riebesehl (« Agrarlandschaften »,), Wilhelm Schürmann (« Fotografien »), Andreas Gursky (« Montparnasse »), Thomas Struth (« Museum Photograph ») et Axel Hütte (« London ») figure l’un des meilleurs et des plus importants photographes allemands de l’après-guerre.


"André Gelpke began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer at an early age, aspiring to become an architect. After completing his apprenticeship, he attended a two-year full-time school program, graduating with a technical college entrance qualification. In 1966/67, he completed an internship with an advertising photographer and in 1967 undertook an extended journey through the Orient, Egypt, and Sudan. In June of that same year, he became caught up in the turmoil of the Six-Day War between Israel and the Arab states, first in Beirut and later in Syria. Completely destitute and seriously ill, he managed to escape to Turkey with the help of a doctor. After completing his military service in 1968, he studied from 1969 to 1975 at the Folkwang School in Essen under Otto Steinert. His diploma thesis focused on the then idealistic hippie journeys by VW bus to Afghanistan, India, and Nepal in search of meaning.
In 1975, Gelpke co-founded the photo agency Visum in Essen together with his former fellow students Rudi Meisel and Gerd Ludwig. In 1979, he left the agency due to his position in a conflict between commercial photography and his efforts to pursue “artistic” author photography. He subsequently earned his living through exhibitions, international workshops, and extensive travels around the world. From 1980 to 1990, he lived in Düsseldorf. In 1987/88, he held visiting lectureships at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and at the Zurich University of the Arts. In 1990, following his appointment to Zurich in 1989, he moved to Switzerland, where he taught as Professor of Photography at the Zurich University of the Arts until 2012. From 2006 to 2008, he also held an additional teaching position at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen.
André Gelpke lives with his family in Zurich and in Grattino (Liguria), Italy."
