A single illuminated manuscript folio page from a 16th Century Safaivid Persian Koran. This folio contains the entire chapter 87, Al-A'La (The Most High). Surah Al-A'la (Chapter 87, "The Most High") is a Meccan surah emphasizing Allah’s power as Creator and Sustainer, urging the glorification of His name. It focuses on the themes of divine guidance, the truth of the Quran, the inevitability of the Hereafter, and the success of those who purify themselves. The surah acts as a reminder of the purpose of creation and a call to focus on spiritual growth rather than just the life of this world. The reverse contains the chapter heading for chapter 86, At-Tariq (The Nightly Star) and its verses, The header is particularly fine (see image 12e). The folio has two decorative Surah headings within a solid green frame. The top header is that for Chapter 87. The script within the heading is in white Thuluth surrounded by gold and bordered with a decorative blue design. The folio is written in elegant nastaliq with simple but vibrant gold aya verse markings and the occasional devotional marking in red providing guidance to the reader. The scripture is enfolded with a solid gold surround frame with smaller black and then blue liners outside this. The right margin contains a decorative marginal jus marking the 10th verse of the chapter. The folio is in good condition for its age.
