The faces of the Virgin and Child are visible through shaped openings in the metal revetment and appear to be printed or transfer images, a technique widely used for devotional icons in the late 19th to early 20th century. The surrounding metal cover, likely copper or brass with traces of gilding, is richly decorated and has developed an attractive aged patina.
