Never framed, never exposed. - Piet Mondrian (1872–1944), one of the pioneers of modern abstraction and a central figure in the development of De Stijl, created Evolution in 1911 as a symbolic triptych marking a crucial transition between his early figurative work and the geometric abstraction that would later make him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Mondrian’s search for spiritual harmony through form and color places him in the same revolutionary lineage as Wassily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Paul Klee, Hilma af Klint, and later modern masters such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Josef Albers, all of whom explored the relationship between abstraction, geometry, and inner meaning. Evolution consists of three pieces showing a female figure in a progressive state of transformation, rendered in cool tones of blue and violet.
