Celestial and terrestrial globes - Globe Chair 15-Inch - 1850-1900
Rare Early 19th Century Globe Stand / “Globe Chair” for a 15-Inch Cary Globe – circa 1800
A rare and highly collectible early 19th-century globe stand (also known as a “globe chair”), originally intended for a 15-inch (approx. 38 cm) table globe, most likely produced for a globe by Cary, one of the most renowned English globe makers of the period.
The stand is crafted in turned wood and retains its original brass meridian ring, along with a beautifully preserved horizon ring. The horizon ring is decorated with compass directions, zodiac signs, month representations, and celestial imagery, making it both scientifically functional and visually striking.
Such stands were designed to support high-quality table globes and are today increasingly rare, especially when surviving with both the meridian and horizon rings intact.
Dimensions:
• Width: 52 cm
• Height: 33 cm (with ring upright 55cm)
Date: circa 1800
Condition:
In good overall condition considering its age. The structure is solid, with expected wear and patina consistent with early 19th-century use. The horizon ring shows signs of age but remains largely intact and legible. Please refer to the photos for a detailed impression.
Remarks:
An exceptional opportunity to acquire an original antique globe stand, ideal for collectors, restorers, or as a display piece. It can be used to complete an incomplete Cary globe or paired with another 38 cm globe.
