Romain antique Terre cuite Statuette d'un couple

A fine Ancient Roman terracotta figurine, depicting a pair of figures, standing side by side. The two forms are rendered frontally with facial features in low relief, now slightly worn from age. The female figure, standing on the right, is shown wearing a stephane, decorative headbands often seen in depictions of high-status Roman women or goddesses, giving some indication of the identity of this figure. She wears long draped garments, with the folds indicated by deeply incised vertical and diagonal lines across the torso and lower body. The male figure, on the left, stands with his legs apart, draped, but mostly nude. He, too, wears a headdress, similar to the female figure's, though it has been chipped to the front, with a segment missing. Their arms at are their sides, with his left hand bent at the elbow, holding his drapery, thrown over his shoulder, in place. The back is plain, with a hole in the centre. Earthly encrustations and signs of wear as consistent with age to the surface, such as minor pitting, chipping, and scratches. Terracotta figurines are the most common sculpture type in Greek and Roman art. Often fairly crude in their rendering, they were clearly designed for use across all social strata, and provide insight into the everyday lives of Romans. Such statuettes would have often used for votive purposes. Measurements: (circa) H 9.3cm x L 6.1cm x W 2.2cm Provenance: Ex private collection, London, UK, 1969-1999.
