Precious Japanese Katana by Mukansa Swordsmith Kunimatsu – NBTHK Hozon
This exceptional Japanese katana was forged by Musashi no Kuni Jū Kunimatsu (宮家邦松), a highly skilled modern master and disciple of the renowned Hiroku Hirokuni.
Certified by the NBTHK Hozon Token, this blade has been officially recognized for its authenticity, quality, and preservation, placing it among the highly regarded works of the modern Japanese sword tradition.
Swordsmith
Kunimatsu’s real name was Miyake Teruyoshi. He studied under Hiroku Hirokuni, from whom he inherited both the technical precision and spiritual depth of traditional sword forging.
In 1989, his mastery earned him the distinguished title of Mukansa swordsmith, meaning “Beyond Judgment” — a title reserved only for the highest-ranking artisans whose works no longer require competition evaluation.
Kunimatsu also studied the art of sword appraisal under Ikeda Suematsu, the prominent businessman, sharpener, and appraiser who directed the Japanese Sword Accessories Museum. This deep academic and artistic background refined his eye for perfection in both forging and aesthetic detail.
Blade Description
This katana, forged in Heisei year 1989, is a remarkable example of modern craftsmanship rooted in ancient tradition.
The beautifully refined jigane and outstanding hamon reflect Kunimatsu’s pursuit of the Aoe tradition, admired for its clarity and elegance. The blade features a double hi (bo-hi) on both sides, a finely carved kanji inscription, and a graceful sori of 2.2 cm, ensuring excellent cutting dynamics and visual harmony.
Despite being a contemporary work, the sword fully embodies the spirit and discipline of classical samurai craftsmanship. The perfect balance, flawless polish, and crisp nakago all testify to Kunimatsu’s unrivaled skill and dedication.
This sword is not only a weapon — it is a masterpiece of art and history, a tangible reflection of Japan’s living sword tradition.
