This type of mask is associated with the Noh play “Ama,” in which a female diver is killed by a dragon and later attains enlightenment through the guidance of Monju Bosatsu, ultimately transforming and achieving Buddhahood. The narrative is linked to themes of spiritual transformation, often referred to as henshin jōbutsu (attaining Buddhahood through transformation) and the salvation of women. The mask carries a subtle yet eerie presence, characteristic of Deigan masks, with softly modeled features and a restrained but expressive gaze. The slightly parted lips reveal gilt teeth, adding a refined contrast to the calm facial expression. The surface is finished with gofun (crushed oyster shell pigment), giving it a soft, luminous quality typical of traditional Noh masks. Fine painted details such as the hairline and eyes are delicately executed, enhancing the overall elegance. The reverse shows strong and confident chisel marks, clearly reflecting the skill of the mask carver. The interior is finished with a glossy lacquer, highlighting both the craftsmanship and the structure of the hand-carved form. A cord is attached for display or use. Condition is fair to good vintage condition with signs of age and use, including scuffs, minor paint loss, slight discoloration, and general wear consistent with age. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 21.2 cm W 13.9 cm D 7 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
