Item Description
伊賀焼 Iga Ware 六角 Hexagonal 竹節形 Bamboo-Form 花入 Flower Vase
This tall, slender vase is hand-built in Iga ware (Iga-yaki), one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions originating in Mie Prefecture. The body is formed in a striking hexagonal cross-section — confirmed by the octagonal-cut rim visible from above — and shaped to evoke a section of bamboo, with horizontal ridge lines articulating the surface into distinct segments. The form tapers gracefully from a broad, flared foot toward a narrow cylindrical neck.
The glaze treatment is the defining highlight of this piece: a layered application of celadon-toned ash glaze pools and breaks unevenly across the surface, revealing the warm iron-rich stoneware body beneath in bold patches of amber and deep brown. This interplay of matte celadon and glowing ochre reflects the kiln atmosphere unique to Iga ware, where natural ash and high-temperature firing create irreproducible surface events. The interior of the neck carries traces of dark kiln glaze, adding depth to the piece. A square incised potter's seal is stamped to the unglazed flat base.

Artist Profile
This vase is an unsigned work of Iga ware (伊賀焼), produced in the Iga region of Mie Prefecture, Japan. Iga ware traces its origins to the Nara period and rose to prominence during the Momoyama era (late 16th century) as a highly prized ceramic for the tea ceremony. Its defining characteristics are the use of local coarse clay rich in feldspar particles, which produces an unpredictable texture under extreme kiln temperatures of 1,300°C or above, and the formation of natural ash glaze (bidoro) — a glass-like green deposit created when pine wood ash melts onto the clay surface. The deliberate interplay of flame, ash, and scorch marks (koge) is considered the aesthetic soul of Iga ware. The maker of this piece bears a square impressed seal; attribution remains unconfirmed.
