The People by KISHIN
Signed,Kishin Shinoyama
Pi International/2012/H297×W226mm/Japanese
“The People by Kishin (Signed)” is a collection of works by Kishin Shinoyama, one of postwar Japan’s leading photographers. This catalog and photo book was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name held at four museums in Japan (Tokyo, Niigata, Hiroshima, and Kumamoto) from 2012 to 2013. Spanning nearly 50 years from the 1960s to around 2010, the book is organized around the theme of “People,” featuring a selection of portraits of prominent figures that capture the spirit of their respective eras. There was a time when it was said that Nobuyoshi Araki was the master of eros, Daido Moriyama of art, and Kishin Shinoyama of commercial photography. While he is famous for his nude works featuring actresses such as Rie Miyazawa, Kanako Higuchi, and Saki Takaoka, his artistic merit is highly regarded precisely because he mastered commercial photography. Katsumi Aburaya, who designed numerous collections of Nobuyoshi Araki’s work, stated in his book *Power Designing* (1984) that Kishin Shinoyama’s *A Fine Day* is the textbook for photobooks.
