Jinba hat is a type of hat used by infantry and foot soldiers on the battlefield since the Muromachi period.
It was made of thin iron or leather, painted with lacquer, and used as a substitute for a helmet. Those used by shoguns and samurai were made of wood and painted with lacquer. Later it was called a chest hat and came to be used by samurai when going out. It was made of rubbed leather and painted with black, vermilion, silver, and gold lacquer on the back. Some have family crests on the front and are decorated with lacquer and light blue.
