"Once again, Walter Niedermayr has documented the traces of tourism engraved in the alpine landscape with the meticulous precision of the archeologist in this new book of photographs.
This selection of fourty medium-format color photographs by Walter Niedermayr, who was born in 1952 in Bolzano, transports us into the world of perpetual ice-to Mount Titlis, the glacier which rises proudly above the boundaries of space and time three thousand meters above sea level in the Swiss Alps. Only the human figures in colorful leisure attire which populate this seeming Shangri-la bear witness to the influence of civilization, transforming the alpine landscape-once the paradigm of an aesthetics of the sublime-into a trivial theme park governed by the laws of consumption. Niedermayr's camera captures the aura of a mountain landscape that has become a legend. The alpine setting in which the puppet-like figures of tourists appear are shaped by these clichés and bold idealizations of nature to such a great extent that subjective perception and feelings become mere platitudes."

Great photobook by Walter Niedermayr.

'Walter Niedermayr, born 1952 in Bolzano, is an artist/photographer and lives in Bolzano.
Since 1985 he has been working on projects in which he examines space as a reality occupied and designed by people and scrutinises the ephemeral areas between imagination and conception. This is expressed in the groups of works Alpine Landscapes since 1987, Space Con / Sequences since 1991, Shell Constructions since 1997, Artifacts since 1992 and Image-Space since 2001, the latter of which has to do with architecture and the visualisation of space and spatial atmosphere. The Iran series was created between 2005 and 2008. Since 2011, he has been a lecturer in artistic photography at the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano.
In 1995, he was honoured with the European Photography Award for his series Die Bleichen Berge. In 1997, Niedermayr took part in the project treffpunkt niemandsland by the Berlin artist duo p.t.t. red on the Brenner Pass.
Since 2000, he has been working with the Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, who run the SANAA office in Tokyo.
In the serial works of the Bildraum group of works, in which he mainly deals with the architecture of SANAA, the focus is on a correspondence between the two visual languages, which becomes visible in joint exhibitions or publications: Walter Niedermayr | Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / Sanaa and Novartis Campus-Fabrikstrasse, 4, Sanaa/Sejima+Nishizawa, works by Walter Niedermayr (see bibliography).
Walter Niedermayr is represented by Galerie Nordenhake, Berlin/Stockholm.
The magazine for photography and media art EIKON wrote about Niedermayr's work that ‘his work with colour, which approaches pastel tones, is particularly striking, mostly overexposed in contrast to the standard of photo labs with their dense and rich colours, which makes the images somewhat more removed from reality and makes them appear faded and transparent’.
Jörg M. Colberg, founder and editor of Conscientious, commented on the book The Aspen Series as follows: ‘The result is a wonderful mix - a German sensibility (usually just one step behind the more famous, austere designs from Scandinavia) working together with the best of Dutch design, and photographs appearing in groups of up to six images - all in an unassuming book whose preciousness slowly unfolds as the reader notices the elegance of the typesetting, the qualities of the different papers used, and the binding itself (the square is very small). The Aspen series is the perfect book for this work, which, I must add, is exactly what it is: photographs of a snowy landscape with people skiing (I prefer the landscapes to photographs of skiers). Some of the images in this book are simply amazing.

Jörg M. Colberg, founder and editor of Conscientious, commented on the book The Aspen Series as follows: 'The result is a wonderful hybrid – a German sensibility (which usually is just one step short of the more celebrated, austere designs coming from Scandinavia) working with the best in Dutch design, making photographs that come in groups of up to six shine – and all that in an unassuming book whose preciousness slowly unfolds, as the reader notices the elegance of the typesetting, say, the qualities of the different papers used, and the binding itself (the square is very small). The Aspen Series is the perfect book for this body of work, which, I must add, is what it is: Photographs of a snowy landscape, with people skiing (for what it’s worth, I prefer the landscapes over the photographs of skiers). Some of the spreads in the book are just amazing. Crucially, the book does not attempt to overwhelm with glossy scale (the temptation so many makers of coffee table books sadly give in to). Instead, it opts for elegance, with restraint bordering on the minimal."
