大友克洋 Otomo Katsuhiro (born April 14, 1954, Tome, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan) is one of the most influential manga artists, screenwriters, and film directors in the history of Japanese popular culture. He rose to international prominence with his landmark manga series AKIRA, which began serialization in Young Magazine (Kodansha) in 1982 and ran for eight years across 2,000 pages. In 1988, Otomo directed the animated film adaptation of AKIRA, which became a watershed moment in global animation history and is credited with sparking Western interest in anime. His signature style — meticulous linework, complex perspective, and dramatic urban landscapes — revolutionized the visual language of manga. Otomo received the Eisner Award Hall of Fame (2012), the Winsor McCay Award at the Annie Awards (2014), and the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival (2015), becoming the first manga artist to win the latter. He was also awarded France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officier, 2014) et Japan's Purple Medal of Honor (2013).
