Elegant and rare set of 6 sterling silver table card holders / miniature dishes by the renowned American silversmith Gorham, produced during the highly collectible early “Durgin Division” transitional period. Originally an independent and prestigious American silver manufacturer founded in Concord, New Hampshire, the William B. Durgin Company was acquired by Gorham in 1905. Following the acquisition, Gorham continued to use the distinctive oval “D” hallmark for a relatively short transitional period before the complete integration of the Durgin production line into the main Gorham workshops. Pieces from this unusual transitional era are especially interesting for collectors because they combine: the artistic identity and refined craftsmanship of Durgin, with the production quality and prestige of Gorham. For this reason, “Durgin Division” silver is considered far more distinctive and less common than standard later Gorham production. These finely crafted shell-form pieces display richly modelled naturalistic surfaces and sculptural intertwined ring supports in the Art Nouveau / Jugendstil taste. Their elegant multi-purpose design allowed them to function not only as place or menu card holders, but also as refined miniature bonbon, nut or calling card dishes for luxury table settings.
