A Hunter is one of Daido Moriyama’s most important early photobooks, published in 1972 by Chuo Koronsha as part of the Eizo no Gendai series. Issued around the same period as Farewell Photography, it marks a crucial moment in Moriyama’s early career. Inspired in part by Jack Kerouac’s On the Road, Moriyama travelled across Japan by car, photographing streets, towns, landscapes, people, animals, signs and fragments of everyday life. The resulting images form a raw and restless visual journey through postwar Japan. With his distinctive high-contrast, grainy and blurred style, Moriyama captures the anxiety, energy and dislocation of modern Japanese society. The book also includes a text by Tadanori Yokoo.
