Sextant - Bronze - Tamaya & Co. Ltd - MS-2 (636) Sextant marin

Item Description Tamaya MS-2 (636) Marine Sextant — Made in Ginza, Tokyo, December 1967 — Complete Set with Original Wooden Case, Manual, and All Accessories - collector’s piece A vintage Japanese marine sextant manufactured by Tamaya & Co., Ltd. (玉屋商店), one of Japan's most respected makers of precision navigation instruments, based in Ginza, Tokyo since 1882.This is the Model 636 MS-2 (Type II), Tamaya's well-regarded full-sized marine navigation sextant, complete with its original signed wooden carrying case, factory plaque, instruction manual, and full set of accessories. The frame is a lightweight cast metal in the classic skeletal "ladder" pattern, finished in matt black, with a precision-graduated arc, micrometer drum, vernier scale, and a heavy 4× monocular telescope. The factory data plate inside the wooden case is stamped: "TAMAYA & CO., LTD. NO. 22887 — GINZA TOKYO 1967 12"The arc of the sextant itself is engraved: "TAMAYA & CO., LTD. No. 22827" along with patent numbers PAT 816704 / 191138 / 816705 / 385242.Note: the serial numbers on the sextant body (22827) and on the wooden case data plate (22887) differ by one digit; this may simply be a clerical inconsistency at the factory, but precise circumstances are unknown — the case has the correct fitted interior for this exact model. The wooden case, fitted with green felt-lined compartments in good preserved condition, is supplied with two original keys; the lid has the words "CADET I" written by hand in black marker pen by a previous user, suggesting earlier institutional or maritime training-school use.Included accessories: index mirror, horizon mirror, full set of shade glasses, four eyepiece/filter caps, monocular telescope, eyepiece/polarising filters, adjusting wrenches, original Japanese-language instruction booklet (玉屋航海用六分儀 II型 / III型), and the Japan Surveying Instruments Industry Association recommended-product seal affixed to the case interior. This sextant is offered as a vintage collector's and decorative scientific-interior piece, not as a calibrated working instrument — please read the condition notes below carefully before bidding. Size Sextant body: Length: 35 cm Height: 28 cm Width: 14 cm Weight: 1920 g Wooden case: Width: 36 cm Depth: 27.5 cm Height: 17 cmTotal weight (including wooden case): 4400 g Condition The instrument shows considerable signs of use consistent with its working life: the matt black paint is rubbed and chipped in many areas, and verdigris (green oxidation) is visible on several brass fittings and screws — all clearly shown in the photographs. There are no missing parts, no breakages, and no dents to the frame.Mechanical movement: the index arm, micrometer drum, and clamp all move freely with no binding.Optics: the lenses and mirrors are intact with no cracks or chips, but show noticeable haze and dirt from age and use; the sun was visible through the telescope and shade glasses during basic inspection, but the seller cannot guarantee measurement accuracy.Wooden case: scuffed and worn externally, with the words "CADET I" hand-written in black marker pen on the lid by a previous user; the case is structurally sound; the green felt interior linings are in good preserved condition; both original keys are included.Manual: complete but heavily worn, with creasing and edge damage to the cover. This piece is offered AS-IS as a vintage decorative and collector's item, NOT as a precision working instrument.
