The Exile is inspired by the Finnish roots of Erik's mother who often took him to Viking-related museums. Kriek also cited 'Wickie the Viking' and 'Thorgal' by Jean Van Hamme and Grzegorz Rosinski as influences as well as the 1984 Icelandic cult film 'When the Raven Flies' (1984).
