C.G. Hallberg - 1939 - Chope - 304,2 g - Argent 830 - Suède
This exceptional Swedish silver tankard, crafted in 1939 by the prestigious Stockholm firm C.G. Hallberg (Carl Gustaf Hallbergs Guldsmeds AB), represents a fine example of late-1930s Scandinavian silver craftsmanship with strong royal associations.
The tankard features a classic baluster form raised on three characteristic ball feet, with a gracefully curved handle and a domed, hinged lid surmounted by a spherical finial. The lid is crowned by an inset silver medallion bearing a high-relief profile portrait of King Gustaf V (reigned 1907–1950), encircled by the Latin inscription GUSTAF V SVERIGES KONUNG ("Gustaf V King of Sweden"). This medallion, likely derived from or inspired by contemporary Swedish coinage of the era (such as the 1 Krona pieces featuring the king's likeness), adds significant historical and patriotic appeal, commemorating the long-reigning monarch during a pivotal period in Swedish history.
The body is richly ornamented with neoclassical and rococo-revival elements: a broad repoussé and chased frieze of acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage encircles the domed lid and upper rim, while delicate beaded and twisted borders accentuate the transitions between sections. The exterior displays selective gilding, enhancing the contrast between the bright silver surfaces and warm golden highlights on the rim, handle attachments, and other prominent details. The interior is fully gilt (gold-washed), providing both visual elegance and practical protection against tarnish from beverages.
Hallmarks are clear and complete, including the maker's mark CGH (or variant interlaced form), Swedish national control marks (three crowns in trefoil), purity indication for 830/1000 silver (Swedish standard), Stockholm town mark, and date letter/code corresponding to 1939. Additional control marks (including heart, crown, and geometric devices) confirm authenticity and quality under Swedish assay regulations.
Dimensions: Height approximately 13 cm (to finial).
Weight: 304.2 grams — a substantial and well-balanced piece for its size.
Condition is very good overall, with original gilding largely intact, minor expected light surface wear consistent with age and careful use, and no significant dents, repairs, or monogram removals. The piece retains its crisp chasing and regal presence. They are small dents on the top rim, look carefully at pictures 17-21
A desirable collector's item combining royal commemorative interest, fine Swedish silversmithing from one of Stockholm's leading historic firms, and attractive proportions suitable for display or ceremonial use. Perfect for advanced collections of 20th-century Scandinavian silver, royal memorabilia, or period tankards.
