This piece is a carved wooden mask from the Māori culture (New Zealand) dating from the second half of the 20th century. Traditional art of the indigenous Māori people. Sold with the stand.
The style of the sculpture focuses on the representation of an ancestor (Tīpuna) and features the characteristic curvilinear patterns of Tā Moko (the traditional sacred facial tattoo). Pieces with this specific shape with the hairstyle/bun on top are often called Parata or Upoko Whakairo (carved head).
It is an artistic reproduction or decorative ethnographic art piece produced mainly in the 20th century (common from the mid-century onwards). They are widely traded in ocean art auctions and antique shops.
