Paul Jouve (1878-1973) - Singe et ses petits - Paradis Terrestres
Created for the celebrated 1932 bibliophile publication Paradis Terrestres featuring text by the famous French novelist Colette, this illustration showcases Jouve at the height of his Art Deco maturity.
Departing from the satirical classical parodies of his teenage years, this composition highlights an intimate group study of an orangutan surrounded by offspring and smaller primates, focusing on familial tenderness, anatomical rhythm, and expressive linework.
Jouve was famous for avoiding taxidermy, preferring to study living animals directly. His extensive studies of primates took place both at the Paris Jardin des Plantes and the Zoo of Antwerp (Zoo Antwerpen), which provided modern enclosures to observe animal social behavior up close.
