Patricia Lee Smith (née le 30 décembre 1946) est une chanteuse, auteur-compositrice, poète, peintre, écrivaine et photographe américaine. Son premier album de 1975, Horses, a fait d’elle une figure influente du mouvement punk rock basé à New York. Smith a fusionné le rock et la poésie dans son travail. En 1978, sa chanson la plus connue, « Because the Night », co-écrite avec Bruce Springsteen, a atteint la 13e place du Billboard Hot 100 et la cinquième place des UK Singles Chart.

En 2005, Smith a été nommée Commandeure de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres par le ministère français de la Culture. En 2007, elle a été intronisée au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. En novembre 2010, Smith a remporté le National Book Award pour ses mémoires Just Kids, écrites pour tenir une promesse faite à Robert Mapplethorpe, son compagnon de longue date. Elle figure à la 47e place du classement des 100 plus grands artistes de tous les temps établi par Rolling Stone en 2010, et a reçu le Polar Music Prize en 2011.
