Annibale Carracci (1560-1609), after - Hero and Leander

An exceptional, museum-quality 18th-century Italian academic master drawing depicting the famous mythological tragedy of Hero and Leander. This highly sophisticated artwork is a faithful and masterful period replica of the celebrated faux-bronze medallion painted by the High Baroque giant Annibale Carracci between 1597 and 1608 within the monumental fresco cycle of the Farnese Gallery in Rome (Palazzo Farnese). The composition centers around a circular medallion (tondo) showing Leander swimming across the Hellespont sea toward the tower where Hero holds a lamp to guide him. The medallion is flanked by powerfully rendered, muscular male nudes (ignudi), an anatomical back-view figure on the far right, and atlantes in dynamic, twisted Baroque poses. A grotesque theatrical mask and putti anchor the decorative framework. The artist demonstrates superb academic mastery through precise pen work, layered brown washes that create deep three-dimensional volume (chiaroscuro), and delicate white gouache highlights that beautifully capture the gleam of simulated bronze on the hazelnut-toned paper. Period: 18th Century School: Italian School Subject: Hero and Leander (After Annibale Carracci) Medium: Pen, brown ink, and ink wash, heightened with white gouache on historical hazelnut-toned paper. Dimensions: Image: 260 x 370 mm / Framed: 39 x 49 cm Framing: Professionally housed in an elegant custom-made burr wood veneer frame with an acid-free mat and protective glazing, ready for immediate gallery display. Overall State: Good antique condition. The central image is beautifully preserved with sharp linework and intact highlights; displays very well. Paper Condition: The historical paper shows typical age-related wear, including minor tears, fraying, and creasing along the outer margins and corners. Note: These peripheral imperfections do not disturb the main composition and can be easily concealed under a standard mat or frame passpartout. Frame: The premium burr wood frame is in excellent condition.
