Matthias Gesnerus (1691- 1761) - Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini - 1735

Gesner, Johann Matthias. Title: “ Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini” Gesner, Johann Matthias. “Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini.” 1 of 2 volumes. 4 leaves, LVIII, 936 pages. With engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved title vignettes, and 6 folded copperplate engravings. 25 x 20 cm. Contemporary leather. (Only volume 1 exists. Leipzig, Caspar Fritsch, 1773–1774.) Scriptores rei rusticae veteres latini is a famous collection of ancient Roman writers on agriculture and rural economy, edited and annotated by the German classical scholar Johann Matthias Gesner and first published around 1735. Scriptores Rei Rusticae Veteres Latini, edited by Johann Matthias Gesner, is a comprehensive collection of ancient Latin writings on agriculture and rural life. This first volume offers invaluable insights into the agricultural practices, techniques, and knowledge of the Roman world. The text, presented in Latin, showcases the detailed observations and practical advice of Roman authors concerning crop cultivation, animal husbandry, and land management. It remains an essential resource for scholars and enthusiasts interested in classical literature, Roman history, and the historical roots of agricultural science. Gesner's meticulous editing enhances the accessibility and scholarly value of these enduring works. Matthias Gesnerus (born April 9, 1691, in Roth an der Rednitz; died August 3, 1761, in Göttingen) was an educator, classical philologist, and librarian. From 1730 to 1734, he served as rector of the Thomasschule in Leipzig. With the founding of the University of Göttingen in 1734, Gesnerus was appointed professor of poetry and rhetoric and simultaneously assumed the directorship of the Göttingen University Library. While his work as an editor of classical authors was not particularly innovative, his reform ideas for school and university education made him one of the most influential pioneers of Neohumanism. His major work, the four-volume dictionary Novus Linguæ Et Eruditionis Romanæ Thesaurus, published in 1749, remains one of the most important foundations for the development of the comprehensive Latin lexicon, the "Munich Thesaurus," begun in 1900.
