Anonymous Scribe & Elegist (19th C.) - Shia devotional manuscript (Du'a Kumayl et al.) - 1800

[SHIA LITURGICAL MANUSCRIPT - COMPOSITE DEVOTIONAL BOOK] A 19th-century oblong Safina pocket-book containing the Du'a Kumayl, prophetic accounts of Maryam and 'Isa, and Marthiya elegies for the Tragedy of Karbala. N.p., n.d. [Iraq or Iran, 19th Century]. Physical Description Format & Binding: Oblong octavo safina format 17x10cm), opening vertically. 70 leaves, some missing. Bound in full maroon leather; covers rubbed with an oxidized central gilt mandorla motif. Exposed stitched spine. Worn. Paper & Script: Composite structure using thin laid paper after a thicker local stock. Written in dense black ink using a clear, fully vocalized (with harakat) Naskh script. Verified Textual Content Part I: The Du'a Kumayl: Located on the finer paper, preserving the landmark Shia supplication taught by Imam Ali, featuring its famous mystical core: "Even if I could endure the heat of Your fire, how can I endure being deprived of Your generosity?" Part II: The Cycle of Maryam and 'Isa: Hagiographical accounts including the Miracle of the Cradle (infant Jesus speaking aloud to defend the Virgin Mary) and an ascetic dialogue between Jesus and a weeping mountain. Part III: The Karbala Elegies (Marthiya): Bound on the thicker stock, transcribing the climax of Laylat al-Ghariba, recording a dialogue between Umm Kulthum and the spirit of Fatima al-Zahra after the massacre. Concludes with the formula « تمت » (Tammat). Provenance & Condition Provenance: Early signature by a member of the prophetic lineage: “Al-Abd Al-Musawi Muhammad”. Later 20th-century marginal additions in blue ballpoint pen confirm continuous ritual use. Condition: Authentically worn devotional object. Leather scuffed with minor loss at corners. Interior showcases natural patination, minor finger-soiling, and slight loosening of the paper quires, few leaves missing.
