The Macallan 18 Years Old Fine Oak – Purple Border Edition (2008). A rare discontinued expression from Macallan's pre-triple Cask era.

An exceptional piece of Macallan history: a genuine 2008 bottling of The Macallan 18 Years Old Fine Oak, from the exclusive window when this expression was still matured exclusively in bourbon and sherry oak casks, before Macallan reformulated the entire Fine Oak range into Triple Cask Matured in 2008.

This bottle represents a vanished chapter in one of Scotland's most collectable distilleries. Production of this specific formula lasted only four years (2004–2008), making early bottlings increasingly scarce and sought-after by serious collectors.

Discontinued Formula: The bourbon & sherry oak maturation was replaced by the triple cask system and eventually rebranded as Triple Cask Matured (April 2018).

Authentic Purple Border Edition: The embossed blue-purple box with thin purple border around the label is the definitive marker of this pre-2008 production run. It's instantly recognisable to serious Macallan enthusiasts and collectors tracking distillery history.

Batch Number 2272: The bottle carries a documented distillery number, providing traceability and provenance for collectors and auction verification.

Condition & Presentation: Comes with original purple-bordered box—increasingly rare in complete condition. The box alone is a collecting point for Macallan enthusiasts.

This bottle is a snapshot of Macallan's house style before the company's major strategic shift toward triple cask. Palate-wise, expect:

Nose: Dried fruit, sherry influence with citrus and vanilla—classic European oak character
Palate: Full-bodied, spiced complexity with caramel, oak, and orange—the clean elegance of bourbon and sherry oak in harmony
Finish: Medium-long, warm, with lingering wood spice and chocolate undertones

The dual-cask formula delivers a more pronounced sherry character than its successor, making this a genuinely different drinking experience. Collectors often compare early Fine Oak 18s favourably to modern bottlings for their depth and clarity of wood influence.

The Macallan 18 Years Fine Oak Bourbon and Sherry Oak Casks was bottled from around 2004 until 2008, when it was completely replaced by the 18 years Macallan Fine Oak Triple Cask Matured. This narrow production window, combined with the brand's global reputation and the whisky investment market's appetite for discontinued expressions, has made these bottles increasingly difficult to locate.
