A Beautiful and Rare Thangka Depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, Tibet, 19th Century
Ground Mineral Pigment on Cotton
L86 x W72 cm (Image L59.5 x W48 cm)

This finely executed thangka depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated in meditation at the centre of the composition. The Buddha is shown seated in the lotus posture upon a multi-coloured lotus base, performing a teaching gesture with both hands before the chest. Behind the figure appears a circular halo and mandorla set against a stylised landscape with clouds and distant hills.

Surrounding the central figure are numerous small seated figures of the Buddha arranged in orderly rows, forming a devotional assembly that symbolises the countless manifestations of enlightenment.

The painting is executed in mineral pigments on cotton, with strong blues, reds, greens and yellows characteristic of traditional Tibetan devotional painting.

On the reverse of the painting appears a three-character Sanskrit inscription, likely associated with ritual consecration. The thangka is mounted within its original textile border.

Shipping worldwide by EMS, usually 7-14 days to deliver.
