Jono Sugiartono — Enduring Enthusiasm Across Eras, 2025

Museum-scale mixed-media painting · Oil · Acrylic · Natural pigments · Metallic gold pigments · Authentic volcanic material · 90 × 90 cm · Unique original artwork 1/1

A journey through human civilization

Enduring Enthusiasm Across Eras is a major symbolic composition by Indonesian contemporary artist Jono Sugiartono.

A monumental human presence emerges from a landscape suspended between the earth and the cosmos. Its form appears to move through successive eras, carrying the memory of ancient civilizations toward an unknown but luminous future.

Flowing lines travel across the canvas like roots, rivers, constellations and pathways of knowledge. They connect human figures, celestial forms and geological matter within a single living network. Each line suggests that knowledge is never isolated: it is transmitted, transformed and enriched from one generation to the next.

The composition moves between deep blue, turquoise, ivory, ochre, black and luminous gold. Earthly mineral tones meet atmospheric light, creating a visual tension between ancestry and possibility, memory and discovery.

The golden passages act as fragments of preserved wisdom. They illuminate the darker areas of the painting and reveal new details according to the viewing angle and surrounding light.

An entirely handmade multilayer artwork

The work was created entirely by hand through successive layers of oil, acrylic, natural pigments, metallic gold pigments and authentic volcanic material on canvas.

The volcanic material gives the surface a distinctive geological character, connecting the painting physically to the Indonesian land. Its natural irregularities, mineral density and tactile relief make the composition impossible to reproduce identically.

The interaction between fluid painted lines, textured volcanic matter and metallic pigments creates a surface that changes continuously with light. From a distance, the work presents a powerful figurative and cosmic composition. At closer range, it reveals accumulated layers, granular details and luminous fragments embedded in the canvas.

This is not a print, reproduction or digitally produced image. It is a completely handmade and unreproducible original artwork.

Sundanese philosophy

The painting is rooted in the Sundanese philosophy of:

Silih Asah — refining one another
Silih Asih — loving one another
Silih Asuh — caring for and guiding one another

These principles form the spiritual structure of Jono Sugiartono’s practice. Humanity progresses when knowledge, affection and responsibility are passed between individuals, cultures and generations.

In Enduring Enthusiasm Across Eras, this continuous transmission becomes a universal journey. The human figure does not remain fixed in one historical moment. It stretches across time, carrying ancestral memory while opening itself to new horizons.

The painting ultimately celebrates humanity’s enduring desire to understand, create, transmit and advance.
