Empire romain Bronze Dice (Sans prix de réserve)

A fascinating and unusually heavy bronze gaming dice or gaming-related object, characterized by a distinctive system of circular point markings. Unlike the familiar numerical arrangement of conventional dice, this example appears to display an unusual repeated pattern: two opposing/individual faces bearing three concentric or punched circles, while the remaining four faces carry a single circular mark. This deliberate arrangement gives the object a particularly enigmatic character and may indicate a specialized form of play rather than an ordinary numerical die. The circles are deeply defined and stand out against the dark green and brown patinated bronze surface. The substantial weight of approximately 57.20 g gives the piece a remarkably solid presence in the hand. Gaming was well established throughout the Roman world and was particularly associated in popular imagination with soldiers and life around military settlements. If the Roman attribution of this piece is correct, its unusual configuration raises the intriguing possibility of a specialized gaming or chance object, rather than a standard six-number die. Material: Bronze Weight: 57.20 g Form: Cubic gaming die / gaming object Markings: Two faces with three circular marks; four faces with one circular mark Condition: Age-related wear and substantial dark green patination; please study the photographs carefully. An intriguing and highly unusual gaming object whose non-standard marking system distinguishes it from conventional ancient dice and makes it especially interesting for a collection of Roman gaming, military-life or everyday objects.
