ABOUT THE ARTWORK
“Don’t Follow the Crowd” is a contemporary urban artwork about independence, non-conformity, and the courage to choose one’s own direction.
The composition is intentionally simple and impactful. A child, shown in a stencil style, crouches with a spray can as if actively shaping the message. Above him, the bold statement “Don’t follow the crowd” is reinforced by a sequence of arrows, where one direction breaks the expected visual flow. This graphic contrast creates an immediate reading: refusing blind conformity and daring to think and act differently.
The child figure gives the work a powerful symbolic dimension. Childhood often represents instinct, sincerity, and freedom from social conditioning. Here, the young figure becomes the embodiment of individuality and creative rebellion. The textured blue background adds freshness and clarity, while the strong black-and-white contrasts give the piece its street art energy and visual strength.
Both direct and universal, this artwork speaks about self-confidence, originality, and the importance of staying true to one’s own path.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alexandre Petrus is a French stencil artist known for a strong and recognizable visual language combining urban energy, sharp contrasts, and emotional symbolism.
His signature technique is based on hand-cut double-layer stencils. Light and shadow are separated into two different stencil layers, then applied onto a hand-painted abstract background. This process creates a striking dialogue between precision and spontaneity, structure and instinct.
To date, more than 450 artworks sold in over 10 countries have joined private collections in France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, the UAE, and the United States. Alexandre Petrus has also created live paintings for major French institutions including Disneyland Paris, produced murals for professional spaces, and exhibited in several street art events in France. His work is currently shown at Galerie Spot 72 in Le Mans.
His subjects range from childhood and symbolic scenes to wildlife, mythology, and pop culture. Across all themes, his artistic identity remains immediately visible through his layered stencil compositions, expressive backgrounds, and his small smiling “AP” monogram, which appears on every original piece.
Each artwork is an original, one-of-a-kind creation. No print is made, and no background is ever repeated identically. In addition, each hand-cut stencil is used for a strictly limited series of 50 original artworks maximum. Once this limit is reached, the stencil is permanently retired. This ensures both rarity and authenticity while preserving the uniqueness of each piece.
