Mother Mary is a powerful large-scale portrait combining the raw visual language of graffiti and street art with the timeless imagery of religious iconography. A Madonna-like figure holds her sleeping child, evoking the instinctive tenderness, protection and nurturing presence of a mother. The work invites us to reflect on the things that shape us from an early age - the beliefs, ideas and values passed down to us by those who raise us. The image explores how our understanding of the world is often formed through the people closest to us. The contrast between this universal moment of nurturing and the raw, weathered aesthetic of the artwork gives the piece a contemporary edge while leaving the meaning open to the viewer.
RVK's work is influenced by graffiti, street art and the grungy textures of urban environments - peeling paint, faded posters, scratches, stains and imperfections. This piece has been built up using spray paint, airbrush, acrylic paint and hand-cut stencilling. Every stencil is designed and cut by hand, with each layer carefully worked, distressed and reworked to create the final surface. The result is an original, one-of-a-kind artwork with a strong physical presence.
