École suisse (XX) - Portrait of Dora Bösch-Thut
**Portrait of Dora Bösch-Thut, Wife of Swiss Politician Emil Bösch — Flawil, 1948**
Painted in the Swiss town of Flawil in April 1948, this portrait depicts Alice Dora Bösch-Thut, wife of the Swiss politician and lawyer Emil Bösch (1909–1992). The inscription on the reverse identifies the sitter and records the precise month and place of execution, giving this expressive portrait a compelling personal and historical context.
The painting captures a moment of transition in the couple’s life. In the year it was painted, Bösch stepped down as district administrator of Untertoggenburg, where he had served since 1936, and established a legal practice in St. Gallen. He had recently served as a delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Berlin, Copenhagen and Warsaw, and would later become a member of the Swiss National Council from 1951 to 1963.
Set against a richly patterned floral background, Dora’s thoughtful expression provides an intimate counterpoint to her husband’s public career. Its vivid colour, textured brushwork and documented identity offer collectors both a striking portrait and a tangible connection to a Swiss political family at a turning point in its history.
