A classic 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the "Kazan Mother of God" (Kazanskaya), featuring a fully embossed and chased brass oklad cover with a beautifully pierced decorative halo.

The icon portrays one of the most sacred and protective Marian images of Russia. The Virgin Mary is shown in a close-up bust view, her head inclined towards the young Christ Child (Christ Emmanuel), who stands to her side raising his right hand in a blessing gesture.

The icon is overlaid with a heavy, pressed and chased brass oklad (revetment cover) that covers the garments and background. A highly attractive feature of this piece is the ornately pierced, openwork halo (nimbus) over the heads of the figures, allowing the gold undertones of the underlying painting to shine through, creating a beautiful multi-layered visual effect.

The underlying image is hand-painted in tempera and oil on a solid wooden panel with a traditional gesso ground. The decorative revetment cover is crafted from a chased brass sheet featuring dense floral and geometric patterns, typical of late imperial Russian manufacturing workshops.

The icon and its brass cover are in good antique condition, showing an authentic age patina with natural oxidation. The piece exhibits minor losses, surface rubs, and light deformations consistent with its history, which enhance its genuine antique character. The painted faces remain clear and well-preserved beneath the openings. The small wooden panel is structurally stable.
