Kushi, Kogai and Kanzashi 4-Piece Set with Raden Peonies - Lacquer, Mother of Pearl - Japan - Meiji period
A complete Japanese hair ornament set of four pieces, decorated in raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) on black lacquer, presented in its original round fabric-covered box.
The set comprises:
- A large kushi (comb) decorated with peonies, berries and foliage in bold, three-dimensional carved shell
- A smaller kushi (comb) decorated with a delicate floral spray in flat raden inlay
- A kogai (hairpin) with matching leaf and vine decoration at both ends
- A kanzashi (hairpin) with red beads
The two combs show the range of the Meiji raden tradition: one with sculptural carved shell figures that rise from the surface, the other with finely cut flat inlay. The shell shimmers in iridescent tones of green, pink and violet against the deep black lacquer.
A complete four-piece set of matching hair ornaments, kept together in its original box, is increasingly difficult to find.
