DIAN GURBADA — BADAK HEUAY, 2026
Original Mixed-Media Painting — Sundanese Architectural Heritage
60 × 65 × 1 cm · Tableau unique — 1/1
In Badak Heuay, Indonesian artist Dian Gurbada brings architecture, cultural memory and contemporary abstraction into a richly textured composition.
The title refers to a traditional Sundanese roof form, connecting the painting with the vernacular architecture of West Java. Shelter becomes more than a physical structure: it carries the memory of a place, the continuity of community and a sense of belonging.
THE ARTWORK
Working with acrylic and mixed media on canvas, Gurbada builds a surface through layered colour and expressive gestures. Pigment becomes structure, while variations in texture give the composition a tangible sense of depth.
The painting moves between architectural association and abstraction. Its forms invite the viewer to consider how familiar structures can endure in memory, becoming impressions of shelter, landscape and lived experience.
Resilience emerges through this relationship between material and subject. Accumulated marks suggest persistence and transformation, giving the work a grounded presence within its compact, nearly square format.
From a distance, the composition offers an interplay of colour and form. Closer observation reveals the individual gestures and material transitions through which that structure develops.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dian Gurbada, born in 1975, is an Indonesian painter whose practice explores architecture, landscape and cultural inheritance.
Drawing inspiration from the traditional villages of West Java, he transforms roofs, granaries and familiar buildings into compositions that move between recognition and abstraction. His work considers home as both a place of protection and an emotional connection carried across generations.
His exhibition history includes presentations in Ciamis in 2023, live painting at JHCC in Jakarta in 2025, and participation in the Yogyakarta Art Festival that same year. He has also created murals for schools and coffee shops.
Presented by Abstract Art Gallery, Riga, Gurbada develops a personal interpretation of Sundanese heritage through colour, texture and the enduring significance of shelter.
