Iconic poster  727  by JTakashi Murakami / 1996

This unframed poster features a reproduction of Takashi Murakami's 727 (1996), a three-paneled painting in MoMA's collection. The work features Mr. DOB, a character created in 1993 who was among the first in a pantheon of characters inspired by the culture of anime (cartoons) and manga (comics) that emerged in Japan’s postwar era and became wildly popular in the 1980s.

Takashi Murakami, a multifaceted artist who works in sculpture, painting, engraving, installation... He is called ‘the Japanese Andy Warhol’, a simplistic nickname that still explains his art a little. Because Murakami is pure Pop. He draws on popular culture and uses it as a tool. In fact, his typical characters are nowadays pop icons in themselves.

Takashi Murakami was born and grew up in Tokyo in the 1960s. His goal was to work in animation or manga and so he studied at Tokyo University of the Art, specialising in Nihonga, the traditional Japanese style of painting. With tradition in mind, he became interested in more contemporary styles. A trip to New York led him to draw influences from American art. He began to create an art that was essentially Japanese in essence but with strong and obvious Western influences.
