Edward Hopper - Room in New York / 1932

Room in New York / 1932 by Edward Hopper. With views through an open window and not from it, Hopper makes us participants (or turns us into voyeurs) as we contemplate this couple. We say couple because it seems the most logical thing to us, but... are they really? As many art historians state, one of the peculiarities in Edward Hopper's paintings is that we only see “the tip of the iceberg”, with this painter there is much more in what is not said, what is not seen, compared to what is visible. Returning to the painting, we see a man and a woman who remain in the same room. The distance between them is very small, although the “mental distance” is another matter. The man, seated in an armchair, is absorbedly reading the newspaper. The woman is seated in front of the piano, but we know from her slouched posture that she is not going to play it seriously, she seems absorbed in her deepest thoughts while absent-mindedly, with an absent gesture, her fingers play with the keys. Each to his own, they do not relate to each other, there is not even eye contact. What does Hopper want to tell us with this scene? He leaves us a free interpretation, we can invent a whole story about this distant couple. Maybe, after all, this is the painter's purpose: to make us think through his art. Hopper is one of the foremost representatives of American realism, and there is nothing more American than his work, which depicts contemporary rural or urban scenes, solitary characters, even when surrounded by people, figures in silence that perfectly portray this increasingly dehumanised West. Having started out in illustration by Correspondence, around 1920 he was able to devote himself exclusively to painting, very realistic, far removed from the avant-garde, but paradoxically modern, anchored in his own time but mysteriously timeless. Measurements: 70 x 50 cm. All posters are original and have been selected by art lovers for art lovers. Collector's item. This item is shipped certified with a tracking number and carefully protected. Welcome to our Rewind Art and Film Gallery, where the biggest names in art, fashion, design and film converge.
