"The volume ‘Paris’ by Robert Frank plays with the possibilities of photographic vision. The editor, Ute Eskildsen, was able to secure the co-operation of the photographer himself and work with him to select images from his archive, some of which had never been enlarged before. The result is a small book with a timelessly simple layout, in which the photos taken in Paris between 1949 and 1952 already point to a visionary way of seeing for which Frank became famous with his work ‘Les Américains’, first published in 1958 (in Paris!). Robert Frank's contribution to the series of Paris books will not mean that the history of photography will have to be rewritten, but the publication of the material shows Frank's potential. The book, published to accompany a travelling exhibition, can be interpreted as a kind of ‘missing link’. It illustrates part of the path that the young photographer had to take from finding images on commission and securing his livelihood to developing his own style. The fact that Robert Frank would revolutionise photography can certainly be felt in his Paris book, which was naturally designed with this knowledge and published more than five decades late." (Hans-Michael Koetzle) Steidl, Göttingen. 2008. First German edition, first printing. Hardcover with jacket. 187 x 224 cm. 108 pages. 80 black and white photos. Photos: Robert Frank. Interview by Ute Eskildsen with Robert Frank. Text in German. Condition: Book inside and outside excellent, like new and unread; fresh and flawless. Dustjacket very fresh and complete with no tears, with no taped tears and with no missing parts; light trace of use. Overall very fine condion. Great photobook by Robert Frank about Paris - in great condition. By the maker of 3 of the most important photobooks ever published: "Les americains"/"The Americans" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 247), "Flower Is" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 264) and "The Lines of my hand" (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 261). Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1924 and went to the United States in 1947. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans, first published in 1959, which gave rise to a distinct new art form in the photo-book, and his experimental film Pull My Daisy, made in 1959. His other important projects include the book Black White and Things (1954) the book Lines of My Hand (1972) and the film Cocksucker Blues (1972). Frank’s work has been the subject of major exhibitions around the world and is included in many significant public and private collections.
