Roman bronze surgical / medical scalpel with a tapering leaf-shaped blade and a small circular loop at the opposite end for suspension or attachment. The original bronze ring for suspension is still preserved in place. The blade features a shallow notch at the shoulder, a detail seen on several Roman surgical tools.
Length: 121,8 mm
Condition: very good and solid condition, attractive smooth patina and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
Such implements were part of Roman medical or cosmetic sets, used for precision work such as incisions, cauterising, or mixing ointments. The combination of a functional blade and suspension loop reflects the careful design and portability of Roman medical equipment.
