Nemesis, goddess who personified retribution for the sin of hubris (arrogance before the gods) was adopted from the Greek mythology into Roman religion. She ensured that excessive pride or undeserved fortune was punished, keeping balance in human affairs. In Rome, Nemesis was often associated with Fortuna, the goddess of luck.
Romans frequently invoked Nemesis in arenas and military settings. Gladiators prayed to her for fairness in combat while soldiers saw her as a protector against enemies who gained undeserved advantage.
