Iittala - Alvar Aalto - Vase (3) - SAVOY - Verre

Three lovely art glass vases (or bowls) — in apple green, s chocolate brown and clear — created by world renowned Finnish architect and designer ALVAR AALTO (1898-1976) for IITTALA (Finland). The luminous pieces were first mouth-blown and then hand-cut before going through several polishings. Commissioned by Iittala, Aalto’s line of such pieces — in different sizes and colours — became known as the SAVOY collection because they were amongst a range of custom art pieces and furnishings that Alvar and his wife Aino Aalto created for Helsinki’s luxury Savoy Restaurant, which opened in 1937. The vase’s organic shape, inspired by waves in the water, was considered revolutionary at the time of its design. DIMENSIONS: The three vases measure 10 cm wide and 3 cm high. CONDITION: Fine condition with a red sticker on one of the three vases, and the company name embossed on the underside. Iittala’s glass is known for being of the highest quality and crystal clear. SHIPPING: The items will be carefully wrapped, boxed and shipped with a tracking number. ALVAR AALTO made his name as a master of modern architecture through his unique style and exceptional talent. He worked very closely with his wife Aino Aalto. They designed concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums and private homes around the world and their works have been exhibited in New York’s Museum of Modern Art and at other leading museums and galleries since the 1930s. The duo also designed several glass pieces, which were intended to become parts of buildings or architectural decorations. However, the objects took on a life of their own. The most famous design by Alva and Aino Aalto is the Savoy Vase (also called the Aalto Vase) — first seen at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. IITTALA was founded as a glassworks company in 1881, and has expanded into a highly successful global Finnish design brand, which also now includes ceramic and metal design objects, tableware, and cookware. The brand is renowned for its beautiful collections that embody the essence of Finnish design, while seamlessly blending form and function. With a focus on clean lines and a minimalist approach, Iittala's products showcase the excellent craftsmanship and timeless appeal of Finnish/Scandinavian/Nordic design.
