Emerging from the vibrant tapestry of Tanzanian culture in the 1960s, Tingatinga is a unique style of painting that has captivated art enthusiasts worldwide. Its founder, Edward Saidi Tingatinga, a self-taught artist from the Makua ethnic group, drew inspiration from the rich natural beauty of East Africa, particularly the iconic “Big Five” animals: elephants, hippopotamuses, giraffes, lions, and zebras. Tingatinga’s paintings, characterized by their simplicity, bold colors, and stylized depictions of animals, often depict scenes from the African savanna, showcasing the dynamic movements of these majestic creatures. His signature technique involved using glossy enamel paints typically used for bicycle repairs, applied to plywood panels of 60×60 cm. Today, Tingatinga stands as one of Tanzania’s most celebrated art forms Its vibrant colors and captivating imagery serve as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Tanzania, showcasing the nation’s harmonious blend of African tradition and artistic innovation. Rubuni Rashidi Rubuni was born in Livangula in 1969. He came to Dar es Salaam in 1988 to look for a job and succeeded to get a job as a service man a a house. He quited after one year and wrote a letter to the Tinga Tinga Cooperative to ask for a position as a painter. His teacher was Mzee Chimwanda. He has married in 1993 and now he is living with her wife and two children in Kawe, north of Dar es Salaam. His paintings were shown on exhibition in Sweden in 2008 (Lilagalerie). His paintings belong to the high quality work. His paintings of giraffes are very typical. Rubuni Rubuni Rashidi´s paintings were used by the designer Ayumi Sufu (Jazzkatze) from Tokyo. The dress was shown at the Tokyo Fashion in Spring 2010. Rubuni Rashidi has built up his name and he is a well known Tinga Tinga painter.
