Rosenthal - Fritz von Stockmayer - Vase - Peint à la main et signé, FvS Pearl Color & Velvet Touch. - Porcelaine - Amende à la finition soyeuse

Rosenthal Porcelain Vase - Design by Fritz von Stockmayer, circa 1940 This finely crafted Rosenthal vase, signed by Fritz von Stockmayer, represents one of the most refined artistic directions of Rosenthal’s pre- and early-war period. The vase features a soft creme satin porcelain body delicately decorated with Stockmayer’s characteristic botanical motifs. The hand-painted lines - rhythmic, floating, almost weightless - reveal the signature precision and aesthetic calm that define his work. His works from the 1930s–40s are typically marked with his initials FvS, underscoring their authenticity. Fritz von Stockmayer was among the most influential porcelain artists of his era. Before joining Rosenthal’s Kunstabteilung in Selb, he had honed his skills at Arzberg, Schönwald, and Fürstenberg, developing an artistic language shaped by East Asian brush traditions and a deep commitment to painterly detail. His travels to Japan and China left a lasting trace on his designs: light, airy strokes, natural forms reduced to elegant essentials, and a quiet sense of movement. In 1935, Stockmayer became Art Director of Rosenthal’s Art Department - a role he assumed during a period of profound transformation and political tension. Philipp Rosenthal, the company’s founder and of partial Jewish descent, was pressured out of leadership by the Nazi regime in 1934. This marked a difficult chapter for the factory, caught between artistic ambition and political constraints. Stockmayer’s work from these years stands out precisely because it seems untouched by ideological heaviness: he continued to produce poetic, subtle designs, an artistic counterpoint to the increasingly rigid cultural climate. In 1942, Rosenthal honoured him with a dedicated monograph titled “Der Porzellanmaler Fritz von Stockmayer,” confirming his significance within the company’s history. Many of his vases — including this one — bear his distinctive signature, affirming the personal authorship of the decoration. This vase is an excellent example of his artistic vocabulary: refined lines, soft tones, and a harmony between form and decoration that feels both timeless and modern. A beautiful collector’s piece, bridging craftsmanship, history, and quiet artistic expression. The vase is in very good vintage condition with light, natural wear consistent with age.
