Scuola Caravaggesca (XVII) - San Iacopo minore
NEAPOLITAN CARAVAGGESQUE PAINTER - SPANISH
The painting, in excellent condition and accompanied by a splendid contemporary frame, can be attributed to an important Neapolitan-Spanish Caravaggesque painter.
The earthy colors, the material mixtures with white lead elevations, the heavy and rough linen dress and the blown halo, point towards the milieu of Jusepe de Ribera. From the school of the Valencian painter, recently the subject of significant studies (Papi 2007, Porzio 2014, Spinosa 2006, 2021,) personalities of great interest such as Bartolomeo Passante, Juan Do and Hendrick Van Somer stood out. In the face of San Iacopo minore, it seems to be familiar with the proud examples of the Valencian painter's penitent Saint Peter, but the character is revisited in a completely new composition: the saint stands out in three-quarters and shows his face in profile as if hinting at movement, while the clothes crumple following his rotary motion
